How Often Do Elevators Need to Be Inspected in Florida?

Annual inspections plus three-year and five-year tests, explained by elevator type.

Short answer: Every elevator in Florida must be inspected and pass a Category 1 periodic test once a year to keep its certificate of operation. Traction (electric) elevators also need a Category 5 full-load test every five years, and certain hydraulic elevators need a Category 3 test every three years.

Inspection schedule by equipment type

Exact test requirements follow ASME A17.1 as adopted in Florida. Your inspection reports show each unit's test history.

Is there an exception for small elevators?

In jurisdictions where the State is the AHJ, such as Palm Beach County, a two-stop elevator with a current full-service maintenance contract may be exempt from the annual inspection. The owner must verify the exemption every year. Escalators and dumbwaiters do not qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Can my elevator company inspect its own elevators?

The elevator company performs the tests, but the inspection must be performed and filed by a certified elevator inspector. Choosing an inspector who is independent of your elevator company avoids a conflict of interest.
