Door Lock Monitoring, Brake Testing and Code Upgrades

Scope review and planning for door lock monitoring, fire service, brake and other code upgrades.

Short answer: Many South Florida buildings are being cited for code upgrades on existing elevators, such as door lock monitoring and firefighters' service. IEI explains what the citation actually requires, reviews your contractor's proposal for scope and price, witnesses related brake and safety testing, and helps you request a variance when the work cannot be finished in 90 days.

Common upgrade citations

  • Door lock monitoring
  • Firefighters' emergency operation (Phase I and Phase II)
  • Emergency communication and lighting
  • Brake and unintended-movement protection testing
  • Pit ladders, guards and machine room clearances

Frequently asked questions

Can I get more time to complete an elevator code upgrade?

Often, yes. Most AHJs offer a variance or corrective action plan. Broward County, for example, accepts a Temporary Petition for Variance with a corrective action plan, signed inspection reports and a contractor proposal.

Never chase your elevator certificate again.

Tell us where your building is. We will confirm your certificate status, plan your inspection at least 60 days ahead and handle the follow-through.
